The Jews are the people of the book. For nine years, a group of dedicated adult Jewish learners gather every Shabbat morning for the study of the weekly portion. The session is interactive and engaging. Rabbi Londy leads the discussion using the biblical texts and appropriate commentaries. The weekly program is open to our members of the synagogue and community members who are committed to Jewish life.

Throughout the year, mini-courses are offered on a variety of subjects. In the past, Rabbi Londy has offered classes such as: Jewish Ethical Dilemmas; a Jewish view of the New Testament; and the Fundamentals of Liberal Judaism. New courses will continue to be offered.

In celebration of the tradition of all night study on the evening of the Festival of Shavuot, a yearly night of study is offered each year. Watch the calendar for information on this yearly event.

Each year the New Reform Temple sponsors a weekend of learning with a renown Jewish scholar. Multiple opportunities are offered during a weekend to learn with some of the great minds in the Jewish world. Some of the scholars who have honored our community have been Rabbi Gary Zola, the premier authority on American Jewish History; Anat Hoffman, the Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center and Rabbi David Saperstein, rabbi, lawyer, and Jewish community leader who served as United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.

Prospective converts to Judaism find the New Reform Temple to be a welcoming gateway into Judaism. These individuals work with Rabbi Londy in this sacred process of discovery. The New Reform Temple participates with the other congregations in supporting a community wide introduction to Judaism class which prepares people for conversion. Rabbi Londy is one of the teachers of this program.

Individual tutoring for the acquisition of Hebrew reading and comprehension skills is offered by the synagogue year round. A program of individualized study with the congregation’s Hebrew coordinator is easy to arrange.

The Florence Melton School of Jewish Learning has a robust presence in Kansas City. The Melton School engages adult learners in a life-enhancing study of Jewish texts and ideas that nurtures and deepens Jewish community worldwide. Through classes (both in-person and online) and travel seminars, Melton learners find Jewish texts and ideas accessible and relevant to their lives. They become part of a worldwide movement of committed learners who are empowered to enrich Jewish life. The New Reform Temple encourages its members to participate in this program.

Rabbi Londy will teach: <em>OMG, Can You Believe!?</em> In this six-week exploratory course, we’ll dive into the BIG questions around God and God’s relationship to Humankind. We’ll examine the many different understandings of God, free will, and mitzvot expressed by Jewish philosophers, rabbis, leaders past and present – and you. We’ll explore the divine, the prophetic, and even the supernatural, as we amplify and dissect your deepest God-questions. Just do not expect to leave with any final answers.
