Rabbi Levinsky Sermon: January 2

Why Prayer Works

Prayer works not because it changes God, but because it changes us. Jewish prayer trains the heart through three movements: gratitude, petition, and praise. When we give thanks, we learn to see with fresh eyes. When we ask, we keep hope alive. When we offer praise, we step out of ourselves and remember that our lives belong to a larger story. Over time, these practices shape character. We become better people. Prayer does not promise an easier world, but it offers a steadier way to stand within it on these three pillars.

He takes an ordinary stone and turns it into a marker of responsibility. Jewish spirituality never ends in vision alone. Ascent matters only if it brings […]
