Meet Our Rabbi

Frequently people ask me: “What makes The New Reform Temple unique?” I can only answer this question autobiographically. I came to the congregation in 2010 as an interim rabbi as the congregation was making a rabbinic transition. I was to remain here for only one year. This is now my tenth and I intend to remain here until the end of my career. (God willing!)
Why did I stay? I realized that this congregation was unique.
First, the congregation is inclusive.
That is not just a slogan; it is a reality. Our membership is diverse. We do not tell people how they should be Jews. Instead, we support each member’s unique Jewish journey. Interfaith families, Jews by Choice, and members of the LBGTQ community are an integral part of our community. Our members are thoughtful and open minded.
Second, our congregation offers a unique view of Reform Judaism.
We are progressive in our views of worship and practice. Creating an accessible Judaism is our mission. We love the Jewish tradition so much that we are willing to explore new ways of affirming our Jewish identities. We create worship services filled with contemporary, engaging music.
Third, our congregation is built on an ethos of respect.
We have a community that knows how to disagree without being disagreeable. I have never been at a meeting or gathering where people have acted negatively towards each another. That would not be tolerated. Our members are generous and kind.
Fourth, our commitment to learning is extraordinary.
Our congregation demonstrates daily a dedication to lifelong learning. Our school is vibrant but our adult learning is just as active. The passion for Jewish learning is inspiring for me as a rabbi.
Fifth, social justice permeates our congregational culture.
Our members are engaged in the community on so many levels. We are also dedicated to the values of social justice that is foundational to the Reform Movement in the United States.
I stayed at NRT because I believe in what this congregation stands for. NRT is committed to creating a sacred covenant between the members and the rabbi.
We are not perfect but we strive to improve and grow every day.
