Rabbi Levinsky Sermon: March 13
Judaism is Ours
Rabbi Samuel Holdheim once wrote: “The Torah was for its time. The Talmud was for its time. And we are for our time.” While those words are too radical for my taste, they remind us that Judaism does not belong only to the past or to scholars and leaders. It belongs to each of us. In this week’s reading for Shabbat HaChodesh, the Torah entrusts the marking of sacred time to the Jewish people themselves. Holiness does not appear automatically; it is created when we mark time together. Every Shabbat, every moment we choose to sanctify helps shape Jewish life. A vibrant Judaism for our time is created by the choices each of us makes.
