Judaism has always changed with the times. This Shabbat, as we begin reading the book of Deuteronomy, we learn about one example. The writers of Deuteronomy changed biblical law to meet the needs of their time. Then the rabbis created the seder for a new world after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. So too we, as Reform Jews, modify our practices to meet the needs of our families and our time. Our commitment to renewing Jewish life is not a break from the past. It ensures that the enduring wisdom of Torah speaks to every generation.
